Position:

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in Organic Chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor only.

The successful candidate will teach introductory and general chemistry at the undergraduate level, and organic chemistry and special topics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This individual will have research interests, preferably in organic polymer or organic materials chemistry.

In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, participation in assessment of student learning, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate may be required to teach on weekdays, evenings, weekends, and/or online and will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she/they is/are housed for recommending tenure and promotion. Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in chemistry from an accredited institution, with thesis research in organic chemistry
  • Clear potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate/graduate courses in person
  • Evidence of, or clear potential for, mentoring diverse undergraduate/graduate students
  • High-caliber research experience in organic chemistry, preferably in organic polymer or organic materials chemistry
  • Well thought-out, robust plan of independent research activity, feasible for success at CSUN, that includes strategies for generating and publishing data in top-tier journals, recruiting students, and obtaining extramural funding


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral research or industrial research experience
  • Record of recent primary research publications in mainstream, peer-reviewed journals
  • Publication rate as first or corresponding author in mainstream, peer-reviewed journals that is commensurate with experience
  • Contributions to grant proposal writing

Applicants must submit to the website in the section above: (1) a cover letter; (2) a current curriculum vitae that lists all peer-reviewed primary research publications (maximum 3 pages); (3) a 3-4 page (maximum) single-spaced (excluding figures) detailed description of planned research including a brief description of the funding mechanisms that will be pursued; (4) a list of equipment and facilities necessary to carry out a successful research program at CSUN; (5) a two-page statement (maximum) of teaching philosophy, particularly as it relates to the candidate's ability to work with a diverse student population; and (6) the names of three referees who can objectively address the candidate's qualifications, such as Ph.D. and postdoctoral advisors. Letters from referees will be requested by our system upon submission of the completed application, and will be due directly from the letter writers two weeks after the screening start date or two weeks after the completed application is received (whichever is later).

In later stages of the search process, applicants may be requested to provide additional materials, such as published work samples, class curricula, or assessment materials, and work produced through student mentoring.
