Job Description



POSITION OVERVIEW  

KIPP Indy Public Schools seeks an experienced School-Based Medical Assistant (SBMA) to support student health needs across the KIPP Indy network. Reporting to the Director of Student Health (DSH), the SBMA will be a member of KIPP Indy’s regional team and will collaborate closely with the Managing Director of Campus Operations, operations teams, and external partners to meet the health and wellness needs of students. 

The SBMA will help ensure KIPP Indy fulfills its commitment to equity through student health services that drive attendance, retention, and academic success. The SBMA will work collaboratively under the supervision of the DSH and School-Based Nurse Practitioner (SBNP) to complete delegated tasks and deliver high-quality, compassionate care. 

RESPONSIBILITIES  

PATIENT CARE  

  • Works to remove, modify, or reduce health-related barriers to academic success and healthcare access. 
  • Creates a comforting, nurturing environment for ill and injured students. 
  • Assures smooth workflows within the clinic to ensure safe, high-quality, confidential care for all students. 
  • Prepares clinic spaces, exam rooms, equipment, supplies, and documentation to meet students’ individual needs. 
  • Provides triage services to determine appropriate care for each student entering the clinic. 
  • Provides first aid and care for students with minor illnesses or injuries. 
  • Administers medications from home per clinic processes. 
  • Completes patient histories, screenings, and vital signs during student visits. 
  • Assists the DSH/SBNP with patient exams and treatments, including lab services (venipuncture, finger sticks, urine collection) and injections. 
  • Obtains and provides educational materials and resources to students and families. 
  • Responds to medical emergencies across campuses, providing triage, first aid, emergency care, and activating EMS as appropriate. 

COORDINATION OF CARE  

  • Collaborates with students, families, healthcare providers, and KIPP Indy staff to establish and maintain individualized health plans, 504 plans, and IEPs. 
  • Communicates and collaborates with school stakeholders about student health needs, clinic appointments, and absences, following HIPAA and clinic protocols. 
  • Assists with immunization audits and communicates with families about noncompliance, providing resources and support to meet vaccination requirements. 
  • Assists with required state and federal reporting, including internal incident reports, DCS reports, and communicable disease reports, per KIPP Indy policy. 

DOCUMENTATION  

  • Maintains accurate and complete patient medical records and clinic logs (paper or electronic) in compliance with all HIPAA and clinic policies. 

ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT  

  • Maintains files and performs general office functions. 
  • Completes required safety and quality control tasks, including medication counts, supply inventory, lab controls, emergency supply checks, and refrigerator temperature logs. 
  • Attends and actively participates in all required meetings and trainings.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in healthcare or related field. 
  • CPR certification (must be maintained during employment).

  • Highly organized, resourceful, and attentive to detail.

Additional Information



SCHEDULE  

The SBMA follows a 195-day work calendar aligned to KIPP Indy’s instructional calendar. The position is full-time (40 hours/week) during the school year. During the summer, the SBMA may work 30–40 hours/week for 4 weeks to support clinic or community needs. The SBMA returns to full-time hours for KIPP Indy onboarding, typically two weeks before the school year begins. Attendance at up to five after-hours (evening or weekend) family-facing events is required annually. CPR and other mandatory trainings may occur outside typical school hours.
